VISUAL TESTING

CODING

The codes utilized to assess the presence of non-compliances or issues within the electrical installation are labeled from C1 to C3. These codes will be recorded on the Electrical Installation Condition Report, accompanied by a description of the fault's nature, ultimately determining whether the installation will receive a 'Satisfactory' or 'Unsatisfactory' rating.


Code C1, termed as 'Danger present,' indicates an imminent risk of injury, demanding immediate remedial action to eliminate the hazardous condition.


Code C2, referred to as 'Potentially dangerous condition,' necessitates urgent remedial action. This code should focus on declaring the nature of the problem rather than specifying the remedial measures required.


Code C3, designated as 'Improvement recommended,' often suggests that the installation may not fully comply with the current regulations but adheres to a previous set of standards, deeming it safe. However, there is room for enhancing the level of safety

  • Suitability of switchgear and controlgear (e.g., replace old fusebox with wooden back, cast-iron switches, or mixed components)
  • Serviceability of switches, sockets, and lighting fittings (replace older round-pin sockets, round light switches, fabric-coated cables, black switches and sockets in skirting boards)
  • Presence of proper identification and notices
  • Type and condition of wiring system (replace black rubber-coated cables phased out in the 1960s, as well as lead or fabric-coated cables)
  • Ensure presence of a fusebox with a suitable residual current device (RCD)
  • Assess wear and tear, damage, or deterioration
  • Identify any changes in premises usage that may result in unsafe conditions
